Charging camera battery immediately after drained?

Does it make a difference if you wait for the battery to cool down completely?  Or can you toss on the charger right away while the battery is warm?

Under load, the warming up of batteries is expected since it is
a chemical reaction and has no consequence in normal usage
conditions.

The same warm up is very bad if happening during the char-
ging cycle. Modern chargers all use pulse technology to pre-
vent that very warming up.

Charging good batteries while still warm is very save as the
pulse charging process will allow for it to cool down.

Go in peace and have fun, Amanda! :P

Just to clarify, if the battery is hot, does that make a difference?

Thank you

As I explained, it depends what generated the heat.

Any chemical reaction will generate heat so it is normal and
without consequence to feel a warmed unit.

An inner shunt, however, being a low resistance conduction
path, shows a clearly defective battery pack — only one cell
in the pack may be faulty — that will not recharge correctly
and will even be dangerous to use.

Don't you have a spare battery?  Personally, I pop in my spare battery, or one of my spares.  Then charge the used battery after it cools. Likely doesn't make a difference, but just what I have been doing for years.

G'day Amanda

As NS mentions, the chemical reaction during charge / discharge is an actual thing and you can feel it with your fingertips. The charge temp will be easier to feel than the in-the-camera discharge temp

However, via the normal everyday charging operation, your battery will be recharged okay. The charging process will cease when the electrical feedback says "I'm full". B-U-T if you remove & return the battery to the charging device once the battery is cold you will see that it will accept another 5 - 10 minutes of charge as a 'top-up'. This technique can be userful at times

Hope this helps

During most of the time NiCad cells were in use, charging conditions
did generate heat. Almost at the end of their presence on the market,
TWO new charging technology appeared: the pulse charging mode
and the charge maintenance mode. These two improvements reduced
— read cancelled — significantly the warming up of healthy cells.

When NiMH came to replace the dangerous (but most efficient) NiCad,
all new chargers came with these two improvements on board.

Since then, it is normal to expect a cooling of healthy cells being charge.

I'll just swap out the battery with a good one, charge the dead one at end of the day
