70-200mm tripod mounting??

3 years 6 months ago #698259 by KenMan
I should know this, but I'm going to ask anyway.  My 70-200mm has spot to mount bracket for tripod mount.  I haven't yet.  Do I need too?  Or at what point should you mount your lens vs camera body on tripod?

ANY/ALL times!

The collar is there because the lens is pretty heavy for a
single digit body… imagine for your D5000. Whenever a
maker supplies a collar for a lens, you should always use
it without even thinking! ALWAYS.

G'day Ken

Some of us "reel oldies" have seen cameras where the bayonet mount has separated from the body via the weight of the lens pulling it out. I have also seen the tripod screw being pulled out of the base of a camera where the user tried to over-tighten the thread to keep the camera balanced

As NS says .... if the lens collar is there mate .... use the $%^& thing !

Oh man, I just realized, I need to update my profile here! The D5000 is SUPER old.  I have a Nikon D810 these days!

I'm guessing that makes no difference.  Thank you!

The D810 is waaaay better built so it can suffer more stress
but don't risk it… the cost is too high and it won't be stable
anyway.

When I got my 70-200mm, I bought another tripod mount so I could mount.

Yep, if the lens has a tripod mount, use it.

Echoing what others are saying.  It's there for a reason.

For a 70-200mm?  No, anything larger, yes I would

Nikon D300 24-70mm f2.8
70-200mm f2.8
50mm f1.4 & 50mm f1.8
105mm f2.8

Unless you have like the newer shorter and lighter 70-200mm from the Canons RF line, I would support the camera from lens foot.  A normal 70-200mm is heavy.

For a 70-200mm??  Have you ever heard of anyone damaging their 70-200 because the didn't mount on the lens leg?
