Manfrotto is now making camera batteries

3 years 5 months ago #699431 by Ben Vanderbilt
Their prices don't look bad.  But how are these batteries?  I've always thought Manfrotto to be a decent company.  But batteries seems way off in left field, so clearly they didn't just put together a bunch of battery plants, someone in China (guessing) is making these for them.  Pass or consider?

Who knows on the batteries, but that charger is a copy of the Hahnel Procube.  Looks like they just relabeled it with their brand.

They already make lights, so it's not a huge stretch, And to be fair, I can't think of a product I've bought where the battery wasn't made in China, even if the rest of the product wasn't. Charger too.

Well at least they didn't charge a higher asking price over the Hahnel Procube.  Surprised they didn't change the 'Procube' name to something different.  At least try to make it unique other than the red color.

That sounds more like it

They aren't making batteries.  They are making tripods.  They are selling batteries.

Wait, will that thing charge the batteries any quicker?

Hey Jeff,

There is a principle in battery technology that is called inner
resistance
and from that comes the consequent shelf life.

The lowest inner resistance electrochemical compound on the
commercial market was NiCad — now banned. It was the best
in the days to use in flashes but was quite dangerous and had
very short shelf life — in the order of 2~3 months.

The highest inner resistance electrochemical compound on the
commercial market today is the Alkaline battery… it has a quite
long shelf life — expressed in years.

The lower inner resistance means faster charges and discharges
sometimes at 20C (a cell of a given voltage could be fast charge
at 20x that said voltage).

The higher inner resistance means it is dangerous to even think
to charge such batteries — will heat up and possibly catch fire.

On the market today, there is a number of different electroche-
mical compound that all behave rather safely and have a good
self life. The charging speed is directly linked to the inner resis-
tance… any attempt to rush it may have dire consequences.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Best charger on the market!  IMHO at least.

Eh, well the red looks cool.  So is this considered a fast charger?

To create an optimised charger, one has to determine the
safest maximum charging current — which is limited by
the inner resistance of the electrochemical compound.

An optional cheaper charger, with lesser charging current,
may be offered but never a faster (and unsafe) one.

Hello Ben,
Manfrotto is one of the best camera battery-making company, but sometimes the problem arises.
