Lens Hood on Telephoto lens?

If you don't have a lens hood on a telephoto lens, will this impact the contrast in the photos taken with that lens?

Contrast and saturation are both affected should
unwanted light sources kiss the front element.

Furthermore, the shade protects your lens.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Honestly, I can't think of a time not to use a lens hood.  They protect your lens, and prevent unwanted light from hitting your lens

G'day Mike

As a fella who loves shooting 'long' rather than 'wide', I had noticed way, way back that all commercial lens hoods for zoom lenses were set for the 'wide' end of the zoom, not the 'long' end of the zoom

Consequently I was getting lens flare quite often when shooting very close into the sun but without having the sun in the frame.  So I made my own 'super-long' lens hood from a plastic beaker, heavily sanded internally to roughen its surface, spray painted with blackboard paint and with its bum cut out and a step-up ring epoxy glued into the base.

This hood is about 200mm long
and used for 300mm to 800mm stuff
Make: Panasonic
Model: DMC-FZ35
ISO: 200
Aperture: f/3.4
Shutter speed: 1/50 sec

However there are regrettably times when I am without a lens hood ... or the existing hood just does not cover things - so I create my own on-the-spot.  Here I show how it's done
No lens hood ....
Make: FUJIFILM
Model: X-S1
ISO: 200
Aperture: f/4.5
Shutter speed: 1/550 sec

The human temporary lens hood ...

Aperture: f/4.5
Shutter speed: 1/600 sec

Obviously in use the fingers are raised out of frame, but shown here for effect

Hope this helps

Dude, ALWAYS have a lens hood on your lens.  Talking from experience, it's a life saver for your lens!
