Pulling memory card from camera while it's on??

3 years 5 months ago #701775 by Paris Gal
I accidentally pulled the card out of my camera with out powering down.  Does this damage the card at all?

I have not done anything with the camera or card since I did this.

Thank you

You should be safe as freak incidents are possible and,
though very consequential, rather rare.

Go in peace and sin more! :P :P :P

Most cameras have an indicator to show when the camera is reading or writing to the card. If it isn't on when you remove the card you are likely safe. I always turn the camera off before pulling or inserting the card, just to be safe. If it's reading or writing when you turn the switch off, it will complete the read or write cycle before actually turning off. I feel safer this way, and I've never had a card problem so far.

Yeah you only run into problems when you remove when it's plugged into your computer.  This will cause problems or potential fragment problems on card.

Can't say that I have did, but if you are recording video, I bet that would mess up things.

Pulling a card at any time during a write cycle in camera or computer is going to create a partial write and mess up the file allocation table of the card. This will result in the card refusing to read or write until the table is fixed, and maybe the partial write removed.

Thank you all, I have checked and nothing is wrong with the card.   :)  That makes me happy.
