Are camera viewfinders dieing?

3 years 3 months ago #705618 by Mike McKinnon
Since my EOS R, I use my viewfinder far less than when I had my 5D Mark III.  Actually I very rarely use my viewfinder, what are others doing or not doing with their cameras viewfinders?

Do you use yours or use the LCD screen when framing up shots?

G'day MIke

The two times I regularly use the rear screen is when the camera is on a tripod doing studio-type stuff, -or- when it is close to the ground and I can't get down on hands-and-knees to use the viewfinder

Otherwise it is a very close liaison with the viewfinder so that I can see / compose / take the image I want

Perhaps I should also note that much of my work is towards maximum zoom - 15x to 30x zoom and to get best results, I need to tripod my elbows into my body. Holding the camera at elbow-distance to see and compose under these conditions is a recipe for disaster. Also, one is always struggling to see the damn screen due to brightness of the surroundings

Hope this helps

Huh?  No, I don't think so.  Granted I use my LCD screen most of the time, however I'll use my viewfinder during bright situations.

Mine aren't dying.... Actually just the opposite, I seldom use the rear LCD, even on my mirrorless cameras. Same basic reasoning as Phil said...

G'day all

I live in a coastal town enjoyed by tourists - and it is now summer here (along with c-19 issues and restrictions!!!). However, a day or so back I came across a young lady with her new xmas pressy - a Nikon P950 superzoom camera - which she was holding at arms length and using the rear screen for image composition

Now this model sports a "real superzoom" lens running out to 2000mm in Full Frame equivalent terms, and this gal was holding the camera at arms length and trying to capture images of the dolphins playing in the waters about 1/2-km away - and finding it hard to get a 'good clear' image

She was muttering to her companion about "it should be nice and clear" but at that sort of zoom, and held at arms length, I doubt that any camera's I.S system would cope

I use the optical viewfinder to frame up and set exposure settings ;  only use the rear screen for very critical manual focusing with a magnifier,  and  silent / mirror-up  shutter  release .

Not for me.  I like the monitor for working the menus.  I always use a viewfinder when photographing something.

:agree:  :agree:  :agree: … and the VF must be OVF — no compromise.

For some reason, I don't think I'll be still shooting the way
I need an OVF when I'll be 23… for the fourth time! :P

Nope, not for me either.  I use mine often.  When it's bright out, or when I want a sharp view of what I'm looking at.
