Tripods to become obsolete in next few years?

3 years 3 months ago #705892 by Cliff
Hear me out.  There are a number of cameras on the market now that claim 5-7 stops of image stabilization.  Plausible to think in 3 years we make see 8-10 stops?  So at what point does it mean we don't need to use a tripod any longer?  With the exception of long exposures of course.  But even right now you can hand hold ~2 seconds and get a still shot.

What do you think?

While it may be a nice idea  in some circumstances  ,  I  seriously doubt it , Cliff ,  given that for a start ,  not all cameras / lenses  will necessarily  have  stabilisation function on them ,  for one reason or another ,  and  probably other reasons  will prevail in some circumstances .

Yeah, I have to agree on this one.  Tripods won't be disappearing anytime soon.  Even if the camera has X number of stops covered, being dead still on tripod will make a big difference IMHO.

I never use any kind of stabilisation but
I use fast lenses and TRIPODS! :P

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Me too.  Images made from a tripod are always sharper than stabilized hand hand held ones.  Stabilization is fine when there is no other option.  For me, there is always another option.

Seriously, this would never happen.  There are so many situations from long exposures to having the ability to hands-free frame up your shot, where tripods are needed.

Well if you don't want your tripod any longer, feel free to send to me.  I'll be happy to take it off your hand.  ha ha ha

Who wants to hold a camera still for that long?  Tripods are a nice insurance when you want still shots.  Just my 2 cents.

I'm sorry, but there will always be a need for a tripod in photography.  Now it might not be a huge elaborate one, but something will always be needed.

If you want the sharpest, most crisp images, stabilization is not the way achieve it.  It can't compete with a tripod.
