Question about types of 12V batteries and charging camera batteries

3 years 3 months ago #706958 by Toby J
We have an RV and are thinking about investing into 12V lithium batteries.   Then the sales person at the RV shop was trying to sell me on some special inverter I would need in order to charge my camera batteries.  I don't understand how this inverter would be needed I have a 2000 watt one already, granted the one he is trying to sell me is larger, I don't see how that would be needed just for tiny camera batteries.

Have you heard of anything like this?

Thank you

Legitimate question, Toby.What your 2000 W can do is supplying a tension of 110~120 V and a
current of 17+ A. In a standard residence, the current is of 32 A— your
inverter is about half of the current at your disposal at home.

Mind you, modern electronics are waaaaay more efficient than in the
past so I don't think you need the more performing inverter but power
is something I would prefer to have more of than less — specially in the
case of large capacity cells..

Light is free… capturing it is not!

You aren't powering a microwave, these are camera batteries, you'll be fine.

G'day Toby

As a fellow RV owner-driver-user from Downunder ...

There are 2 issues here ~ a) the Lithium batteries, and b) using the inverter for various things including recharging your equipment

a) first ... traditional gel battery usage suggests that you shoud not use more then 50% of the battery's capacity regularly in order to extend the working life of the battery. With Lithium I am advised that you can use up to 95% of the battery juice as needed. For me however, as Li batteries are 300% more expensive than gel, I am going to stick with gel as I get 4+/- years from them and that is okay for me

b) then ... the job of -any- inverter is to convert a lower voltage up to a higher voltage (against a power supply whose job is to supply from a higher voltage down to a lower voltage). So your current inverter's job is to take the 50% of battery amps and supply the vehicle with 110v stuff for whatever you use on 110v. As with any battery + inverter setup, you need to do the maths for battery 'grunt' vs appliance usage

I suspect for you the best solution will be a Power Supply to take the battery 12v and drop it to the 7 or 8 or 9 volts needed for the camera battery.

This is the sort of thing I use - but for your Nikon rather than my Panasonic

Hope this helps

ps- My RV is a 7.25m long job sitting on a Ford Transit chassis and after 16yrs of use is coming up to 500k kms of travel around Downunder-land. We're on the road for about 8 months each year. If you wish to chat more off-line ... <[email protected]>
