Legalities of printing artwork for private use?

Can I get in trouble if I took a photo of artwork at a museum and then printed and framed for my own viewing in my home?

Well how would anyone know you had it if just private?  I wouldn't worry about it.

Yeah, not to be an echo, if no one else will see it, why fuss over it.

G'day Malcolm

There are 2 possible answers here

a) under the Copyright Act there is a 'fair usage' clause that permits some copying of an item for personal or research uses. This mostly is for documents whereby the person / researcher copies a percentage as part of their studies or research etc. This could cover your situation - presuming that the museum / art gallery permits you to photograph the original item - but you are facing poor lighting and other difficulties

b) the -however- part is that maybe the artist has employed a professional photographer to do a 'perfect' copy of their original art work and is offering copies/ prints of that to the public as part of their legitimate income stream - so that the artist is able to put food on the table and a roof over their head ~ you know .... the basics of living on this planet

So you need to decide whether to DIY your quick-pic and get it printed at the corner store, vs perhaps supporting a fellow artist, who really is not all that different from you or me :)

Hope this helps
