Using a flash in a ice building for wedding??

3 years 3 months ago #708273 by Deb Reardon
A friend who was supposed to get married last year, but wedding was pushed to next week has asked me to photograph their wedding.  Here is the tricky part, they just informed me that the building that they are getting married in, is a church made of ice!  The wedding will be at 6pm, which this time of the year is still dark.  I'm concerned about reflections and hot spots from my flash.  But what else can I do here?

Ice is behaving almost like glass, a lot of light will go through and
only some of it will bounce back as harsh light — you will work in
a situation where you must consider the inverse square law at all
times — this includes the solution as well.

Don't even show up if you did not test the place before.

Any change you can get the venue and do a dry run?

Use TTL flash if possible.  It will compensate for the reflectivity.  Use bounce flash if possible.  The positive is that the venue could act as a light tent if it is small enough reducing most of the contrast inherent in flash photography.  Sounds like an interesting job.

Time to get fancy with your angles and diffuse your light.  Considering using a grid to control the light.

Canon 7D w/grip, Canon 40D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro; Sigma 70-300mm f2.8; Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro; Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6

Using a gridded whatever size soft box will help controlling the
specular reflections and light spills forcing sweet falloffs. :)
