Operating temperature of a memory card?

3 years 2 months ago #709058 by KZAM
Strange question, on a FB board I belong to today, there were two photographers ranting about operating temperature of a memory card.  Speaking about cameras that overheat can damage memory cards.  Frankly I had no idea memory cards were impacted from temperatures.  Have you heard this before?

I don't need no stink'in Signature! ha ha ha

Like every bits of electronics — because they are! — cards do have
"best operating temperature conditions". However, they far exceed
those of cameras thus making them a lesser concern.

ADDENDUM

The last time I was working in arctic conditions, the lower
temperatures were no issue.

Operating & storage temperature -40°C to 85°C

As Canadian, I would no experience the higher range of it
with pleasure.

At room temperature, flash memory can retain data for about a year. Increase the temperature and that gets shorter quick.

OK, I'll bite here.  What happens if increased temperature or time beyond a year, does the information just disappear or does it open the doors to getting fragmented?

The data will be irretrievable.

Flash memory fails. Cards automatically read data after it's been written, and if that operation fails, that sector is marked bad and the data is then written to spare sector. No further checking occurs. As time passes, the stored signal degrades but the card doesn't know it and treats it as good. The data in the file might be corrupt, or the file structure might be faulty, which will prevent the data from being retrieved, even if it's otherwise good.

There must be some flex on these numbers.  I know some cameras that get pretty warm, heating up memory cards.  If higher temps really were issue, these cameras would be dead on the spot.

Yeah, if the camera were left on and operating continuously for a year, it would probably cook the card, but that doesn't happen, does it?

So the unknown part is how long exposed to these temps does heat matter?  Interesting.  A friend has a R6 and that thing heats up something awful when shooting 4k.

... but probably not continuously for a full year.
