35mm vs 50mm - you can only have one, which would it be?

I can't take credit for this one.  A post floating around on FB asked the same question.

So, you can only have one lens for the rest of time.  Would it be a 35mm or 50mm?

50mm for me

Over the years, I've learned that one develops an eye for focal length.
My sons were always surprised when I asked for a specific lens while
facing a new scene… a simple matter of training — aka experience.

Between the 2, no preference… I'll take what is there and cope with it.

I've almost always needed something longer that 50mm or wider than 35mm.

That's me: Not Normal.

Among my primes, there is nothing between 24 and 60 mm.

My only primes are a Nikon 50/1.8 (that I got as part of a trade but have never used), a Sigma 70/2.8 macro, a Nikon 85/1.8, and a Pentax 100/2.8 macro. The rest are zooms.

I own these:

16mm ƒ2.8 — 24mm ƒ1.4 — 85mm ƒ1.4 — 60mm ƒ2.8 macro — 105mm ƒ2.8 macro,
24mm ƒ3.5 PC — 85mm ƒ2.8 PC — 200 mm ƒ2 — 300 mm ƒ2.8 — 600 mm ƒ4

14~24mm ƒ2.8 — 24~70mm ƒ2.8 — 80~200mm ƒ2.8 — 200~400mm ƒ4

Last month, I gave 4 lenses to my son… he will get all the rest soon enough.

My zooms are a Tamron 19-35/3.5-4.5 for my Nikon (another lens I got in a trade that I never use), two Tamron 17-50/2.8 (1 for my Sony and 1 for my Pentax), a Minolta 70-210/4 for my Sony, and a Tokina 100-300/4 for my Nikon.

FYI, all except the Nikon 85/1.8 were purchased used.

In BOLD were new… some 30+ years ago like the 600.

All the zooms were new.

Never been a 35mm fan, it's not wide enough for landscapes, and doesn't work well for portraits.  50mm for me.

:agree:  50mm is much more universal lens

Such an easy pick for me - 50mm.  I don't like and never have liked the 35mm.  Just isn't my cup of tea.
