Question about what to wear

2 years 9 months ago #718804 by Mare_333
Hello, I've been wondering what to wear when you photograph at a party. I mean should you dress up, it's not your party so that would be kind of weird. Also (most importantly) fancy clothes are always uncomfortable and as a photographer you need to bend and squat to get the right angle. So for me it seems that I should NOT dress up. However, wearing just jeans and a t-shirt I will stick out as a sore thumb and the client may think that I am being disrespectful wearing jeans. So I would appreciate if you share your experience how do you handle this situation? Thanks so much.

Handshake: I am a newbie to photography (thanks to Alex and my friend). I have gain lots of knowledge in a short time.

I do not have experience in a professional photograph. But thinking that you may wear comfortable clothes so you  can take care of all the shots you need, IMO

So after so many years of doing this or that and life itself getting in my way, I am now at the point where just slowing down and doing things I have put off I have concluded that its time to become creative and do what I want.
Thanks for giving me a place to get started. :-)

If it's a formal event, I usually wear a black long sleeves and black coat. For pants, a black comfortable fabric is the best.

Dress as the guests dress. Your camera gear will make your function obvious, and you don't want to spoil the photos that others might take.

TCav had a good point. As a photographer I usually want to blend into the background and not be too noticeable. It would be unprofessional to wear jeans to a dressy event.

I'd probably wear pants with a nice top/blouse to be comfortable, professional looking, and appropriate for the occasion. I doubt I'd go buy a new outfit or go all out getting dressed up, but if jeans would be inappropriate for the occasion then they'd be inappropriate for me as a photographer at the event.

I’m usually always in polo shirt and either dress shorts or slacks.  So, I’m good to go.

The first rule of action for me is seeing without being seen, so I dress as
to blend in the crowd. While they all have drinks in their hands, I will have
my gear — enough for the pro look.

The only thing I would never compromise on is the shoes I wear and that is
Wallabies types of shoes — I got many in many colours but always the same
safety and comfort… and will fit to anything between a bowtie and jeans.

Light is free… capturing it is not!
