Non f/2.8 lenses??

If you aren't using a lens for portraits or care about shallow depth of field, will you buy a lens that is NOT f/2.8, for example something like f/3.5-6.3?

Hi Joe,

I always get the brightest lenses my brand offers but for the reason
that I very often have to work in low lights first. Second come DoF
considerations and bokeh.

If one really understands the first three conditions for shallow DoF
and bokeh, one can manage approximately with ƒ 3:5 but not much
more than that.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

In general, zoom lenses with constant maximum apertures tend to be optically better.

Everything that you can do with an "f/3.5-6.3" lens, you can do with an "f/2.8" lens, but you'll do it better with the "f/2.8" lens.

I use primes but somewhere along the way had a zoom, probably for a film camera. It was lousy in lower light, just used it out shooting on a sunny day. I don't remember what it was, long since sold/traded in.

Actually, the focal length/ distance to your subject comes into play with DOF as well as the aperture. Bokeh depends more on the number of aperture blades in the lens.

I get what I can afford at the time.  If I have the spare cash for the 2.8 and REALLY want (or need), then I'll get the 2.8.

That's why God invented the Used Market.

I only own one lens I bought new
