How to cut down wind noise when you don't have a dead cat for mic?

When you are out and you forget your dead cat for your mic, what can be used over your mic to cut down wind noise without degrading audio quality?

Anything that will not whistle like a handkerchief, a sponge and
fixed with a rubber band or tape.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

I use a small piece of masking or gaffer tape to stick lapel mics to my chest behind my shirt. This sometimes works even better than a dead cat on an exterior mic. Just position it to avoid the shirt rubbing on the  mic. My favorite spot is in the hollow in the center of my chest. Those with heavy chest hair may not want to try this.

A sock was going to be my reply. I'm not sure why inside out would matter.

Wouldn't that create the same effect as a dead cat with all the fuzzies out?

A good fuzzy sock inside out is actually a good idea.  Never thought about that.  Just make sure it's not a nasty gym sock.  lmao
