Will tripods ever be obsolete?

2 years 7 months ago #724298 by Cathy Kadolph
I was reading some post on FB, talking about how IBIS has really taken off during the last 5-10 years.  This has me thinking, could a day come where IBIS will be something crazy like 15 or 20 stops of stabilization, allowing you to hand hold shots for 1 minute or so?

Obsolete? I doubt it.

IBIS can be a useful feature for some but it doesn't have the
room/space to be a tool.

I don't use any kind of image stabilisation but I use tripods.

G'day Cathy

Ever tried a 15-minute long after-dark exposure of city lights?

OK, good point.  But you have to admit, IBIS is getting pretty crazy!

Some toys may bring some excitement but nothing like the real tool.

Image stabilization was good for 2 to 3 stops when Nikon first introduced its Nikon Zoom 700 VR/Zoom-Touch 105 VR in 1994.

Today, it's good for 4 to 5 stops.

I think the progress has slowed. I don't think it will get much better.

I've been chewing on your question and I think that yes, but
this will require a perfectly stable and a remote controllable
anti-gravity transceiving device. We're not there yet.  :P

I'm a huge proponent of IBIS, but nothing beats a tripod. I can handhold about 2 seconds and get a pretty decent shot with my Olympus, but it's still short of tripod sharpness.

No, OMG good point, can you image trying to hand hold a 4 minute exposure of the night sky? LOL nope.  My arm would be jelly.

That's what I was originally thinking, but then the 14 minute exposure came up.  Come to thinking about it, even 2 minutes is a long time to stay still, or try to stay still.

Huh? Perhaps for shots under 20 seconds, but not true long exposures.

Contrary to urban legend, there are still plenty of photographers who have not made the switch to IBIS bodies and who will continue to use tripods until the extinction of humankind.
