Holdfast Gear Money Maker solo care question

How often should you apply conditioner to this thing?  Is once a year OK?

Hi Peter,

leather conditioners serve two purposes.
1) waterproofing and
2) insure flexibility and surface protection
— these do not apply to canvas units, of course.

No damage is foreseeable in case of slightly too frequent
applications. Is an annual application enough will depend
on exposure to direct sunlight and surface abrasion.

Mine gets conditioned every 6 months or so.  I don't have the solo, I have the original Money Maker, but it's the same

So I have one of these that I got a couple years ago and never have done this.   So...??

How bad is that for the leather if this hasn't been done?

I have quite a few articles of different age that are made of leather,
however, none is exposed to sunlight, rain, or abrasion. I don't see,
feel that it would be necessary to condition any of them. No worry.

Over doing it will saturate the material and leave an oil film on it.

Will leather dry over time regardless of what you have it exposed too?

Among the many features that made it so valuable — flexibility, strength,
resistance to wear and tear, +++, one more was observed: longevity. But
it is by nature an organic material and, when neglected for too long, it falls
victim to decay. Growth of all kinds many feed on it and it will get fragile
structurally — the most irreparable consequence.

Leather and wood have similarities, they are organic… think of musical ins-
truments, they are well where you are well.

But would leather retain color and softness better if conditioned?

Yes. More so if the leather of a working cowboy's saddle and less
if a camera strap. Excesses always have negative effects too.

My wife got me one of their Vegan straps, not to ask a dumb question, but does that need any sort of conditioner?

Dang, I just conditioned mine once. That was nearly 2 years ago.
