Putting Silica gel packs in camera bag?

2 years 6 months ago #726239 by MYoung
Do you keep any silica gel packs in your camera bag to absorb moisture?  I met another photographer today that had a few in their bag.  Kind of curious how effective this is?

Efficient you ask? Oooh yes they are… but ONLY in very limited
set of circumstances. The efficacy is limited first by the quantity
per volume. Second, by the volume that should be protected in
a given sealed, air tight confinement.

To keep some in an opened bag is nonsense.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Yea, they aren't very effective in a camera bag, but in a sealed plastic bag with something stored long term in the bag they can be very effective. I have a sealed jar that I put all of the gel packs that come in product packages that I purchase. Then, when putting a lens, piece of electronics, or something else away into storage for an extended period of time, I throw a few of these in with the item, then seal the bag. Doing this won't do much for visible water droplets in the bag, but they will remove the humidity in the air that's in the bag. Save those silver-gray bags that you get for keeping electronics in them too. The coating bleeds off static electric charges to keep your stored electronics safer.

Silica gel absorbs moisture, and so inhibits the growth of fungus in lenses. I keep several in my camera bags or anything else I store lenses in.

I've been collecting them for years, and renew them frequently. See www.youtube.com/results?search_query=silica+gel+reuse

Never even thought about putting these in my bag.  I always throw these away.

Yeah, never even considered.  If you are opening and closing your bag frequently, wouldn't that be kind of pointless?

I guess it would work if the bag was closed all the time, but I can't image there being that much moisture to harm anything in my bag.

If you open and close your bag when outdoors and humid, when you bring your bag indoors and leave it closed for a few days (i.e.: over a weekend) that's enough to give fungus a foothold, especially for zoom lenses that you've used.

Interesting, never thought about that.  I always get them in my shipped boxes, always tossed them out.
