What will happen to camera stores?

2 years 3 months ago #730025 by Kate Stailey
Another camera store here locally shut its doors from the pandemic crap.  So sad, I like going into a store and touching stuff I might want to get.  Then you have Amazon that is killing small businesses.

So online, is that the future of camera stores?

The ones that are able to adapt will do fine, like Adorama.

But if you want to touch stuff, you'll have to go to NYC.

I don't think Amazon sells cameras. I think they just host Adorama and B&H who sell cameras on Amazon.

Years ago, I made jokes about even gas stations will become virtual.  After last couple of years and following electric car industry, this could very well be the case.  Now back to the OP original question - everything will disappear and be ordered though your smartphone.

I'm getting everything online these days already.  Honestly, when was the last time you step foot in a physical camera store?

I have only one "Local Camera Store" left that I know of, but it's about 32 miles away from me, so not very local. They offer and carry a lot, even for the big TV studios, etc. But getting there is quite a hassle, since it's downtown and in an extremely busy location. Since COVID arrived, I've only been there once, buying most of what I need online now. When things improve I will likely go back, if they are still there. Some real talent behind the counters there and they truly try to help you make good decisions, and not just to push you into the biggest, best, and most expensive that they have. As long as they aren't being overwhelmed with customers, they will take the time to help you make the decisions. Many times I have come out of there with what I wanted cheaper than I had expected to pay, or something better for my need than I was planning to buy. The store is Bigg's Camera in Charlotte, NC.

Any camera store closer to me have gone out of business and are gone, likely because they didn't have the knowledge to adapt to the digital transition. All had offered pharmacy/like developing plus sold film cameras and supplies until very few were buying them, then went out of business. Not much helpful talent in any of them either. The last few attempts that I made with the largest to get film developed, their solutions were way beyond use and they destroyed my film.
