Cameras self sensor cleaning

When you shut your camera down and it says "Cleaning Sensor" whats exactly happening here?  And the debris (if any) that it finds, what is it doing with it?

There is no such thing as a physically moving cleaning system on board
but whatever can stick to the sensor will do so the electrostatic way. The
sensor is submitted to a differential electrical charge so to lose that stuff.

If any, it will fall at the bottom of the compartment.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Cameras with sensor-shift image stabilization can and will shake their sensors to try to dislodge anything that might have accumulated on the sensor.

When you get that message, the camera is shaking its sensor. You may even feel the vibration when holding the camera.

But have you wondered where anything goes that is shakes off the sensor?

It just falls inside the mirror box someplace, which is better than on the sensor.
