An underlying sense of transition

"Ambient light is at its most atmospheric when it’s a mixture of natural and artificial light. Portraits can carry an underlying sense of transition – day to night, light to dark, past to future. All of which can be used as metaphors to create an aura around your subject."

Book: Read This If You Want to Take Great Photographs of People by Henry Carroll

I don't understand what the author means by "Portraits can carry an underlying sense of transition - day to night, light to dark". Can someone please say what this means?

Please forgive me if this is a basic/amateur question.

Thanks.

I think the author is just saying portraits can be very dramatic, or at least that is my take on the statement.

My guess is that the author is trying to overwhelm you with the importance of what he has to say, and is hoping you won't try to figure out what all that actually means.
