Why would you use a lens protector

I've always been from the book of not to put anything unnecessary in front of your lens that doesn't need to be there.  So will a clear lens protector have any effect on the picture quality?

Each air-glass interface reduces contrast and increases internal reflections and the potential for flare. Your lens already comes with many air-glass interfaces, each of which has multi-coatings to lessen the problems. Adding two air-glass interfaces with a filter, especially one that isn't multi-coated, increases the potential for degraded image quality.

I keep this very simple:  I don't use one.

99% of my lenses have only their lens shade as protection. My 14mm
is having its lens cap as protection due to its protuberant front glass,

In my days as a photographer, I have only had one UV filter, and that was my very first lens.  And I only had it because it came with it.

I use a lens hood when I feel protection is needed or have other reasons for using the lens hook, like flare avoidance. I usually don't use a UV filter, unless I think I'll be walking close past bushes or there's other chances of things hitting my lens. Keeping aware of your situation and the dangers of a scratched or broken lens will provide your camera lens with the best protection. Use what you need, when you feel the need for it.

I use a lens hood to keep items away from the glass. I also have a set of Kuvrd flexible lens hoods that not only protect the lens but do great when I have to shoot through glass and want to avoid relections.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I suppose in theory yes, but I don't see any difference, especially if it's mult-coated filter like Hoya EVO antistatic protector. I like the fact that I'm regularly cleaning a filter instead of the front glass and risk microscopic coating scratches.

As you know, if you always use a lens hood there's less risk of lens damage, but wide lenses w/ short hoods can still be prone to scratching.
