Those with 300mm + lenses

How in the world are you traveling with these huge lenses AND the rest of your gear?  A buddy let me borrow their 300mm and while I love the lens, I can't see how people travel with something like this?!  This thing takes up an entire camera bag on its own!

I carry a long lens in its dedicated case.

:agree:  Pretty much what you need to do.  I have a buddy who is a bird photographer and always heads out with large glass, he carries a separate bag for his big glass.

I have just enough room in top of backpack to squeeze my long lens(es) in their respective case / pouches .

I'm not a bird shooter, but do have a Tamron 18-400 mm lens. It's my biggest lens. It's attached to my Canon 90D with double battery extender in my backpack camera bag right now. The lens and the camera, take up about 60% of the space in the bag, but it fits. I have a 50 mm lens, spare batteries, a lens cleaning kit, speedlite, filters, filter wrenches, and a flashlight in the bag along with the camera and this lens. I'm guessing that the bag with everything in it weighs about 20 lbs. Although heavy, this lens, with it's incredible zoom capability, pretty much removes the need to swap lenses for just about any type of shooting that I decide to do.
