Do I need permission to use this photo?

I found a cool and creepy old abandoned house that I would like to photograph and use that shot for an upcoming photo contest.  Now I think I can get the shot that I want from the street (public space).  Clearly no one is living in this place and there are no posted signs anywhere from street view.  So, can I use a photo that I took for a contest without seeking permission from anyone?

I've always been of the opinion that, if I can see it, I can photograph it.

What I do with the photograph may be subject to restrictions.

That being said, the only possible objection the actual owner of the property might have is if it shows the property in an unfavorable way, or if you derive income from it.

And if you win a contest with a monetary prize, I don't know if/how much you can profit from using that photo without a property release. Is the contest going to use winning photos in any way?

I've submitted a photo of an abandoned house to a juried art exhibit. It was accepted and displayed in an exhibit, but there was no money received for accepted photos. I could sell a print, but probably couldn't license usage without a property release.

I wonder with an abandoned house who owns the property, or does it revert to the county? township? state? Can you look it up in your county and see if a property owner is listed?

I would ask the folks running the contest.

I'm going to have to agree about asking the folks running the contest.  They will likely at least point you in the right direction.
