Watermarking sample photos worth doing any more?

Have you noticed that you can easily clone your watermark out of your photos easily?  So does it make sense to even watermark the samples you send out?  Last month I found one of the samples I sent to a client, on their Facebook page withOUT my watermark!

Canon 7D, 15-85mm, 18-55mm, 70-200mm, 100mm Macro, Sigma 120-300mm, Speedlite 430EX II

Not only is it a simple matter to clone out nearly anything, it's also a simple matter to clone in nearly anything. After all, digital is merely imitation imagery.

Watermarking photos is to keep honest people in check

I generally rely on my Camera to insert my copywrite claim in the EXIF Data. This should work well for the "honest thieves". For the true dedicated thieves, I'm also careful not to post photos or release them in a way that might make it desirable for someone to steal. When I do post a photo here or somewhere else, what I post isn't the entire photo. It is a photo that has been cropped from a larger photo and lowered in resolution from the original.

If push ever comes to shove as to the true owner of the copywrite, I have the proof that it is mine because I can prove where the cropped and lowered resolution image came from. No one else can take the exact same photo at the exact same time and location to perfectly match my original full resolution uncropped photo.

G'day mate

You are talking about 'client' and 'sample' and Facebook ... so it appears that you are "in business"
As such I feel that you have the legal right to enter their Facebook site and
a) congratulate them for publishing your photo on their site,
b) advising them that the image is only a sample and the final has not been paid for yet,
c) advising that the copyright is yours by law and
d) they will face legal issues unless they pay for the use of the image

Hope this helps

:agree:   good point.  If a photo of yours is wrongfully on Facebook, you can get it removed by Facebook.
