Carrying the 400mm f/2.8

For all you adventure photographers, with big wallets.  How in the world do you go carrying around a 400mm f/2.8 lens on your adventures?  I don't have one, but last night was looking at lenses sizes and weights and this is a monsterous lens!  I seriously can't see how someone would carry this along with their other gear out into a hike or long adventure??

I carry my heavy lenses in my backpack.

I have a friend who is a bird photographer, so I have seen what he does.  If he is close to his car or truck rather, he will use his 2.8 for when we go on hikes, I want to say it's a 100-400mm f/ 5.6 (I can't recall this one) that he brings instead. Which is substantially a smaller lens.

I just Googled that lens, and WOW that is a huge lens!!  Expensive too.  Don't think I'll be running out anytime soon and buying one.  If I did have one, I would need to carry by itself.

I think most with these sort of large lenses are prepared for lugging these monsters around.  I have a friend who is a wildlife photographer and he doesn't mind carrying this lens
