Purpose of shooting RAW+JPEG?

What is the purpose of shooting RAW+JPEG?  RAW is all you need right, so shooting in RAW+JPEG only will take up more space on your memory card.  So why?

For most conventional purposes, JPEG is fine. Plus, JPEG shows the results of all the image settings you might have applied in-camera.

RAW, on the other hand, contains the actual luminousity detected by the photoreceptors without the manipulation of the camera's settings, so if the image happens to be worth the extra effort, you can process it however you see fit to fine tune the image to meet your preferences.

I see, but dang with how large the files are these days from cameras, that must fill up a camera card pretty fast!

OK, good point.  Buy larger camera cards if you decide to shoot in this mode.

Only when I'm around family who wants copies of the photos, I guess that applies to circumstance where anyone would want duplicates.

Makes it easy to take photos and send off to friends and family.  Thats what I'll use it for during holidays and birthdays.  Clients always RAW, but then I started sending smaller sized JPEGs for test images for clients .
