Will larger sensors be phased out to smaller ones?

I have been wondering about cameras and their futures.  When you consider sensor sizes, and many talking about benefits of full frame vs APS-C.  Will we see sensors not needing to be even as big as these as technology advances?  Are sensor bound by size or pixel size that determines current size requirements?

The preference for 'Full Frame' size image sensors used to be tied to the wealth of lenses available for that format, but with the advent of 'Mirrorless', those lenses aren't as much a consideration as they once were, so I'm at a loss.

Larger sensors produce images with less noise, but producing lenses that project high quality images to cover them is difficult and expensive, which is no doubt why 'Medium Format' is not very popular.

Larger image sensors also produce images with smaller depths of field, which can be useful in the right hands in the right situations, but is more often an encumbrance to neophytes and even experienced photographers who aren't paying attention.

Everything TCav said and: Bigger sensor makes for bigger images. Better for large format printing and allows more cropping capabilities.

You know, technology keeps making things smaller and more compact, but when it comes to sensors, size does matter. Larger sensors usually give us better low-light performance, dynamic range, and that beautiful shallow depth of field we all love. But hey, smaller sensors are getting better too! It's pretty exciting to see how far camera technology has come and where it's headed next.

So, will larger sensors be completely replaced by smaller ones? I doubt it. Photography is a big world, and there's space for everyone and every sensor size.Sure, compact cameras with smaller sensors might gain popularity, but there will always be a market for larger sensors. Professionals and serious hobbyists still want top-notch image quality, and that's where larger sensors shine.Basically, we have this amazing variety of sensor options, and we can choose what works best for us. How cool is that?It seems to me that both larger and smaller sensors will stick around, catering to photographers with different needs and preferences. And that's what makes photography so awesome, right?

Great question! There's a lot of chatter in the photography world about the benefits of full-frame sensors versus APS-C, and whether future tech advancements might eliminate the need for large sensors. The size of the sensor in a camera is crucial because it directly impacts the amount of light the camera can capture. Larger sensors can gather more light, which typically results in better image quality, especially in low light conditions. The trade-off, however, is that larger sensors require bigger and often more expensive lenses. That said, we're living in an era of rapid technological advancement. Who knows, maybe one day we'll have nanoscale sensors that can capture light like a full-frame sensor. Now, when it comes to pixels, it's not just about size, but also about the quality of the pixels. If you cram too many tiny pixels onto a small sensor, you might end up with more noise in your photos, which can degrade the image quality. So, there's a delicate balance to strike between sensor size, pixel size, and the total number of pixels. On a lighter note, imagine if camera sensors kept getting bigger instead. We'd all need to carry around backpacks just for our cameras. Photographers would start looking like turtles with their huge camera "shells" on their backs. Maybe we'd even start evolving stronger necks to support the weight... but I think I'll stick with my compact camera, thank you very much!I hope that helps answer your question, and remember - the best camera is the one you have with you. So go out there and capture some fantastic shots!

Every argument for 'Full Frame' over APS-C is also an argument for 'Medium Format' over 'Full Frame'.

'Full Frame' is a compromise.
