Do photographers NEED social media in 2023?

10 months 3 weeks ago #752885 by Chris Grimm
My photography group had this discussion today and it ended up being a pretty interesting discussion.  Many thought social media in 2023 was more important than ever.  Many others (including myself) felt social media was a crutch, something that was overrated and a distraction for some.

How do you feel about this?

It's an easy (and free) way of reaching a large audience. Will it help with sales? Who can say. Can't hurt though.

I have hustled on social media and planted specific codes, never ever had I had anyone say they found me on social.  Now I still post things, but not as much.  I even tried advertising on FB, nothing.  :(

What I've seen quite a bit (and not necessarily related to photography, often art or crafts, etc.) is the same thing is posted on say, Instagram, and shared on Facebook/Twitter, etc. (I pick just one outlet to follow for each, I don't need to waste my time looking at everybody's everything!)

I've known photographers who post on their social media and it links to their own website. But I've gotten the impression that using social media/Facebook only to try to run a business seems to often attract potential customers who just want cheap.

Never had use for social media of any kind for any reason. What others do with it does not affect me.

Eh, I'm using mine just for personal use.  Social media is such a trap

True on all points, but social media just doesn't have the same reach as back in the day

I barely use mine even for personal use these days.  When I did promote for work, honestly speaking, I don't know of a single person who found me, was from social.

+1 10 years ago, I would jump into social channels (FB and TW) multiple times a day, now I will access maybe a few times per week.

I keep mine only because it’s free and doesn’t cost me anything.  But can’t remember the last time I had a lead that was from social.

Some do, some don't.  Personally I don't use for business, never converted worth the time

Free yes, but your time isn’t free.  The time you spend on social could be better spent elsewhere if this yields no returns?

Time spent? Seriously? Takes all of half a minute to upload something.
