Ice Sculptures In Alaska

13 years 1 week ago #35957 by jennyjohn52
My cousin in Fairbanks just sent me a series of photos from the annual World Ice Festival in Fairbanks. Although it was -2, the sun was bright enough that some of the sculptures were melting. I just thought they were fascinating - and worth sharing.

Here's the website if anyone cares to look at more. They're worth the time, believe me.

Guess you gotta have something to do during those long nights. Beautiful.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I agree, how amazing are those. I just watched a show on TV about people who do ice sculptures. Interesting stuff! Thanks for sharing these.

Beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Every year the city I live near has ice sculptures. There was one that was made into a big 2 seater chair. I sat on it, it was cold. :woohoo:

Fairbanks also has an ice hotel about 40 miles away that's open year round. It has furs for sleeping, you drink at the bar from ice carved goblets and can even play chess on an ice chess board with ice pieces. According to my cousin, the joke is that they had to name it an ICE MUSEUM because the state of Alaska required anit-fire sprinkler systems in all "hotels."

But at zero or minus zero temps I think I'll stay here in Southern California and just appreciate the photos.

Looking at this again, you can't help to wonder how delicate these things are. There are some thin pieces to those statues!
