Killing time this morning - Post up what your Favorite Lens is?

12 years 7 months ago #4702 by Foxy Girl
Yeah and I'm raising my post count to! he he he

This thread could be popular to help people shop around for new lenses. As for myself I only have a few lenses Nikon 50mm, Sigma 28-80mm and Nikon 18-200mm. I'm looking at getting a new lens as soon as I figure out which one I want to get. I shoot a lot of landscape, started playing around with portraits (although I'm just learning).

So anyway what is your favorite lens and why is that?

I'd have to say that I LOVE my 50mm f/1.4. I do mostly portrait photography and what I love most about the lens is the DOF you can obtain. I shoot alot of flowers with it too.

What kind of photos you taking with that lens? I've seen some photos taken with fish eye and I like the angle. I don't own one yet. Post up some pics please ;)

An old "Lester A Dine" 105mm F2.8 manual focus macro lens. Marketed to the Dental Profession in the 1980's for inter-oral photography...One exceptionally sharp lens.. & then my 50mm F1.4 for available light shooting.

My fav is my first lens, which I adapted to my digital and still shoot with today, the Pentax SMC Takumar 50mm f1.4. Solid as a rock, and handles like a dream.

The sigma EX 70mm f2.8 macro is a close second, it's mindblowing how sharp it is.

Yasko,
Funny how both of us list 50mm F1.4's & macro lenses...Just in reverse order.

Hey you're right. Another coincidence, while the our favorites are the same type of lense in reverse order, we both list 1 manual focus lens and 1 autofocus lens in the same order.

Interesting, what benefit is there working with a fixed lens over others?

Fixed focus lenses or "primes" generally are more compact, have wider aperatures, and slightly sharper results than zoom lenses because the lens elements are solidly fixed within the lens barrel. This gives tighter tollerances than the zoom lenses which have movable components. This is also why a 50mm prime can be so cheap. Less components = less $. Zooms, however, are much more popular for their versatility.
