What aperture would you pick if...

What aperture would you pick if... you could only shoot with one aperture setting for the rest of your life?

Would you go with a f/2.8 and have a super shallow depth of field or would you go with something like f/22 or in between?

Personally I would go with something like f/8 or f/11

f/8 seems like a good in the middle aperture

F11 as I shoot a lot of macro & want as much DOF as possible. That said, it really depends on the lens I'm using & what I expect. Most lenses are sharpest 2-3 stops down from wide open, but wide open on a fast lens gives a look that can't be captured stopped down...

It would be f/4 for portraits as I like the shallow depth of field.

I would have to go in the middle as well, so f/8 for me

I would go with f/8. Then I could switch bodies/formats to adjust apparent DOF. On APS-C it would be deep DOF, on up to 4x5 where it would be shallow DOF. If I couldn't control DOF I'd probably give up on photography, and go back to painting. ;)

I would like to see your avatar larger, is that a photo you took?

As for me I would go with f/8 too, just to be in the middle of things :P

First that is not a very fair question :toocrazy: as the variables are innumerable, lens, lighting.

Some lens camera combinations will produce very poor images at certain f stops. Each lens has a sweet spot. now if you were saying with a DSLR and the nifty fifty then F 8

For the most part f 8 should work however some lenses it is f11.
