Curious about moving from Nikon to Canon

12 years 7 months ago #5056 by Scott Knell
I have a old D70 that I've had for a number of years and have been putting some serious thought into moving to a Canon. I've heard pro's and con's about both, but wanted to get some general feedback from others. I've been told that Canon is more widely used by professional photographers and is also better at low light photography?

Please share thoughts on this.

Thanks

It just depends, They are both about the same. Nikon is far better with speed lights. but everything else is about the same. I would say from my experience That more portrait photogs use cannon but more photojournalist use nikon. But then there are Hassy and other medium user for big commercial stuff. What do you shoot? you know your system already and have a few lens and a flash. why change.

I think that all of us that shoot one or the other wish we had some feature/performance that the other has. All we usually have to do is wait a year or so and our complaints will be remedied. I don't really see the point in switching and learning a whole new system. I would suggest it's a pretty even split amongst pros as to which brand they use. Stick with what you know and keep getting better at taking pictures!

If you any amount of money tied up in what you have, then don't even consider it. You would have to replace way too much, not only a camera, but lenses, batteries, grips, specialized adapters if you have any, accessories like remotes also. As mentioned above, all of the major players have quality gear & if you want a particular feature that's not currently on the camera, just wait awhile as it will become available if it is really useful. I know a lot of photographers & they are pretty evenly split between Nikon & Canon in what they use, except that it does seem that more long lens shooters have Canon (sporting events shooters)

Maybe better than a D70, but I will match a D3s or even D700 against the 7D. Nikon fell a little behind a few years ago, but not now. Many pros are going from Canon to Nikon lately.
If you are an enthusiast, you should stick with your present system. The new crop models from Nikon are very fine. D90, D300s, D7000. Why would anyone want to switch?

Why so serious?

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Well so much for that one. Last night I just bought a used D300 from a Craigslist seller. I haven't used it yet but hope to this weekend.
