Do you think people get caught up in "MegaPixels"?

Such a huge marketing ploy. Remember not to long ago 8 megapixel camera was considered great. Now so many camera's are 12, 16 and now you can even find cameras over 39 mega pixels! Seems a bit over kill. Whats your opinion? You think most have gotten hung up on most megapixels, when most can't use the ones they have.

Definitely! Especially at the consumer level it's ridiculous. I thought it was very interesting to see Canon drop the pixel count on the G11 from the G10 (in search of better overall performance?). The worst part of it all is that most people do their photo sharing through the Internet and so end up giving back any resolution gains anyway. I'll put up my 300d (6 MP) against any point and shoot or camera phone.

Phones these days are advertised with 5 or even 8 mp!

It's not so much the number of pixels that's important but the size of them

Yes, you hit the nail on the head with that one. it truly is just a marketing ploy. Years ago when there were digicameras at just 1 megapixel, it really was important to increase it so photographers could print something bigger than 4x6. Consumers still think this concept holds true even when huge megapixel counts outstrip the capabilities of the puny sensors in their point and shoots. It's also increased so much so people will fill their cards up faster and have to buy more...

110% consumers are hooked on the bigger number of megapixels! My sister just bought a new point and shoot camera about a month ago, the first thing out of her mouth wasn't the brand it was how many megapixels the camera had!

Such a good question. My answer is absolutely so! People are way to concerned about megapixels and have no clue how or what they are important for.
