Formatting a new CF card that gets cut its size in half??

12 years 7 months ago #5253 by Wildfire
I just picked up a new 16GB CF card and I installed it in my Canon 5D. This is what I don't understand it registered at 15GB, so I formatted the card in the camera now it is only showing at 7.5GB.

Anyone have any clues why?

Did I miss something about a max CF card size for a 5D, or is this a bad card??

That is odd, did you try to format again?

Here's my 2 cents:

It may be a bad CF card. Do other CF cards work correctly?

Is it possible that your CF card was partitioned incorrectly, or maybe contains the wrong kind of filesystem?

You might want to see if the card is recognized and sized correctly in your computer using something like a USB/CF card adapter. If you don't have one of these, you might want to get
one. They're pretty cheap, and useful.

Maybe you can repartition and format the CF card using your computer, then try it in the camera again? (no guarantees that the computer won't hose the CF card so the camera won't recognize it at all).

...oh yeah...
I forgot to mention...

Make sure your camera supports CF cards of such a large capacity. For example, my old Kodak camera only supported CF cards up to 4GB. Even with the firmware upgrade, it would only support 8GB filesystems.

Really?? There are limitations on how big of card you can place in the camera? That is weird. Well I do have another card but it's a 8GB, and it works just fine. I'm thinking you are right about the limitations, that would make sense here. Thanks so much for the help, I really appreciate it.
