For the amount of money that extension tubes that have the AF/metering contacts cost, you might be better off spending a little more for a dedicated macro lens. They are a lot more convenient to use. You have the ability to change the magnification ratio by simply turning the focus ring. With tubes, you have to add or subtract different length tubes to do this...So if you are serious about macro, get a macro lens, less expensive in the long run.

Tubes are great when you're on a budget, I have the Kenko DG tubes as well. They're built as solid as the canon/nikon tubes at about 2/3 the price. Agree with Scott however, a dedicated macro is a good investment in the long run if you're serious about macro. The benefits are that a macro lens gathers more light and has better depth of field than stacking a normal lens on tubes. Expect to pay from $400 to $750 for a decent macro lens brand new, which is about 3 times the amount for a set of tubes.

However, if you want to get into EXTREME macro, getting super close to things - like having a fly's eye fill up the entire frame type of shot, then a macro lens stacked with tubes is the way to go :)

I have the 12mm,20mm and 36mm Kenko Extension tubes also. It's amazing what level of detail you can get with a 105mm lens. Beware your depth of field will be reduced dramatically with these stacked between the lens and camera.

I use the full sets of extension tubes for both my 35mm cameras and MF cameras. I agree with the previous posts about having a good macro lens but if you're using tubes, a good prime lens can do just as well in a lot of cases. I'll regularly use a 50mm prime with tubes and get just as good a result. Add a lens reverser to a stack of tubes and you're talking skookum macro.
One other thing you can consider is using AE extension bellows. They're not cheap but a good bellows will give you versatility like you wouldn't believe when used with a good macro lens. I have one for my 6x7 and another for the 35mm Canon MFs I use.
Hope this helps...

I don't have any yet. Although I think Santa is bringing me a set along with the 105mm macro lens I've been after!

Now are you guys using your extension tubes with a macro lens?

Sometimes I do, but not too often...If I want really extreme magnification I normally reverse mount lenses or use my bellows
