Question on lens construction

12 years 7 months ago #5439 by Vladimir
What is the difference between how Nikon makes a lens and for example Sigma? Glass is glass right? Yet Nikon lens are better? Is it the quality of glass or positioning that make the Nikon better?

So basically, what makes a secondary secondary lens manufacture different?

From what I have seen it often times is not so much the glass but the rest of the lens construction. All the major manufacturers make cheap lenses too, with plastic mounts, loose fit etc, but they will usually still take a competent picture (unless you are really picky). What buying a manufacturer brand lens guarantees is optimal interface with the camera while 3rd party brands have to reverse engineer this.
That being said even the 3rd party manufacturers have lenses of different qualities and some that might even be better for the money than "brand" lenses. In the end it may come down to you get what you pay for; if you are willing to pay more you will get a better performing lens regardless of who made it.
