I need some help on getting a new sports photography lens

I have recently been given the task of taking some sport photography of my kids and their fall sports activities. Currently I have a 18-105mm, but I'm guessing I'm going to need a much larger zoom for shooting across the field.

I have a few ideas and wanted to get your opinion:

1. 70-200mm f/4
or
2. 300mm f/4

I like the idea of the zoom on the 70-200mm but also heard that the fixed 300mm would be a good option also. I only have budget for one of these. So your help would be appreciated.

Feel free to suggest any other lenses.

Thank you so much for the help

A lot will depend on your budget and what else you might want to shoot. I have a very cheap 70-300 f4-5.6 that I use for that kind of stuff since I don't do it too often, though I am limited to good daylight. A 300m fixed lens can be hard to work with (especially on a crop) if you want to shoot anything other than across the field. The 70-200 is far more versatile for other applications. You've got a lot of options out to 300mm. Hopefully some folks will be able to chime in with specifics, though it might be useful to specify what camera brand/model you are using so other folks can share their thoughts.

Which sports? Time of day (daylight / under lights, etc.) Camera body. Anything else that you can think of that might be helpful
