Nikon vs Nikkor

When talking about Nikon lenses what is the relationship between Nikon and Nikkor? Is Nikkor the same or a sister company of Nikon? Or is it it a completely different company?

Nikkor is Nikon's name for their lenses (with the exception of Nikon Series "E: manual focus lenses from back in film days)

I've heard this before and wondered myself, why? So would this be equivalent to Ford vs Mustang? If that being the case does Nikon have any other "brands" under that umbrella?

Nikon came out with the Series "E" lenses as the 3rd party lens makers were siphoning business away from them, so, they developed the "E" series to get some of those customers back. Optically, they were really good, build wise, well, many people didn't like the use of plastics in them . Several of them are still highly sought after to this day...The 100mm F2.8 & the 75-150 F3.5 are the 2 most wanted.

Why the 100mm? Wouldn't the 105 f/2.8 be pretty much the same thing?

The "E" series is smaller & lighter & as such becomes popular when weight becomes a factor (such as when hiking)

Let's have some fun with this. Better lenses have more glass in them right? More glass = more weight? With that in mind, how much lighter can these lenses be? I may be way off in my thinking, so appreciate your input.

More glass does not necessarily mean a better lens. The newer lenses utilize LD (low dispersion) & aspherical elements for correcting aberrations. Normally it's zoom lenses that will have a lot of elements, not fixed focal length lenses. BTW, the "E" series were popularized by the late Galen Rowell.

Ps, I would have responded earlier, but my day job computer won't let me reply to posts...
