Would you buy a used camera from eBay seller?

I found a good deal on a Nikon D300 on eBay. The only thing is the seller doesn't have any feed back. I have spoken to the guy just 10 minutes ago. He is asking $1100 for the camera and says the camera has only 2000 photos taken with it.

What would you do? I'm thinking it's a risky buy considering he is new on eBay, but "what if" he is legit. This is a pretty good deal?

As long as you pay by PayPal, you should be covered in case it's not as advertised, although it is a pain to have to file a claim...I have bough lots on eBay & 95% of it was as listed. I have also had to file claims twice & I got my money back i both instances, but I've not spent as much as you are considering on a single purchase. The fact that the seller doesn't have a feedback score yet is a bit unsettling though. That by itself doesn't mean they are not legit though.

$1100 is a good price for a gently used clean D300, but an unrated Ebay seller is taking a big chance IMO.

I've bought adapters and used manual lenses from ebay, and that's as far as I go. A modern camera body with high precision electronics has a higher likelyhood of problems when bought used with an unverifyable history. There's some well established, very trusted online retailers that deal almost exclusively in used camera equipment, including refurbished bodies from the manufacturers. They test everything they sell, they know what they're doing, and they rate equipment condition accurately.

www.adorama.com
www.bandhphoto.com

these are the major three, but there's others. I've bought a 30D and 50D refurb from keh and adorama. Clean as a whistle, no problems whatsoever. Chances are you'll find a d300 for around $1100 there.

Not me, I'm pretty skiddish when it comes to stuff like that. I want that piece of extra piece of mind.

I was told that you should buy new camera bodies but lenses are good to buy used.

I bought my last camera on ebay and I have had absolutely no problems, but the seller I purchased from had great feedback. I would be very careful purchasing a high dollar item from a seller with no feedback.

Like flyingv, I bought my Bronica GS-1 on E-Bay and was quite satisfied with the transaction. The seller and I communicated a lot and I'd buy from him again. Have also bought from KEH and they have my repeat business for glass and other camera related items I can't get locally.

If they don't have the rep, no sale

That's what it's all about. Find the sellers with the good reputation and feedback and ebay can be a great tool. Too bad they raised all their rates up!

Hi everyone. Thanks for all the help. I ended up passing on this. When I called back, the guy was very rude and seemed to get defensive when I asked questions about the camera. Go figure, I'm glad I didn't buy it!

I've always had good success on ebay, just make sure they have a good reputation.
