Question on Canon 40D flash properties compared to Nikon D90

13 years 5 months ago #6241 by Steven Swanson
I've owned my Nikon D90 for nearly 2 years now and about 3 months ago I bought a used Canon 40D with a number of lenses. Now with the Nikon I can use the pop up flash as commander for a wireless flash set up. When I bought the Canon 40D, there was no manual with it. And this is the first time I'm looking to see if the pop up flash on this Canon can be used in the same way as the Nikon does (commander for flash)?

I don't have a external flash for the Canon yet. Speaking of which will my SB-600 work with this? If not what is a good Canon flash that will work on this set up?

Thanks in advance.

Steven

Steven unfortunately the on board flash on your 40d will not work as a remote commander for canon flashes. This function has been sorely missing (along with wireless remote shutter control) in the XXD line. The new 60d remedies both those things but loses the magnesium body and a few other details.
I have a 30d and a couple of 550ex flashes that works quite well together although it makes for a pricey combo. You will need one of the pricier flashes (550 or 580) to act as your master and can add a 420 or 430 as your slave units (both of which also make decent stand alone flashes)
