My two favorites are the 70-200 and 24-70. Most of the time I leave the house with just the 24-70.

50mm 1.4 (or 1.2 or 1.8 if need be)

This is the absolute BASIC lens.

I'm seeing this as a question with two answers... My most versatile lens is the Tamron 18-270mm. My must have lens is still in the store. Something fish might look through... :woohoo:

I shoot Canon, and mainly macros. I would most agree with Matt (Henry Peach). Let him get used to the lens it came with. Learn the camera, get a feel for where he wants to head, and then buy a new/new to him lens. I do think a zoom would be of more use then a prime lens. I also think Sharon (icepics) has a good idea- if it's for class find out what he is required to have not what he wants to have. As a former photo student I was required to have the most basic set up, so I honed my skills not my equipment.

I hate to admit it, but the 24-70.

Why hate to admit? It's a great lens

How do you like the autofocus on this lens?

I'll second the 24-70 f/2.8, though I shoot Canon as well. I know Nikon offers the a lens with the same specs, but never looked into it much. My camera doesn't go anywhere without that lens.

I use my 24-105 f/4L the most. 2nd would be my 70-200 f/2.8L.
