Its funny, they don't mind making up the "news",  just not the pics....

Why so serious?

I don't think Reuters issued a ban - that's Petapixel's headline (and PP is a blog that just seems to repost/rewrite stories). If the info. they quoted as coming from an editor at Reuters is accurate (doesn't seem to give a source but was confirmed) then apparently their photographers were told they could still shoot in Raw but would also need to shoot JPEGS and submit those.

Seems like mostly a change in procedure, and many of their photographers are probably already shooting JPEGS for a quick turnaround time and a need for smaller files. I think what might be at least in part creating concerns with ethics is many publications having photographers freelance instead of working for hire directly for a newspaper or media outlet and maybe that isn't providing the same level of professionalism.

From what I remember, they're going after the integrity of photographs.  They want to hit the News market and make it more credible.

And with RAW you have the original negative they can demand if they suspect manipulation.

Exactly!
Just another hurr durrz moment. Now granted they could as Hassner suggests request viewing the RAW. But then I would reply, I do not shoot RAW images, because nobody wants them for news. What would Reuters be able to say to stand on that? Except for rejecting the images.

Now wait a min. I've been reading on here ever since I got here that you can't do near as much with JPEG as with RAW. Now you can???

Don, RAW is a beautiful file that keeps like a negative in film days.
Whatever you manipulate, must be saved in another fie format, like .jpg or .tiff. you can not alter a RAW and save the changes in RAW. That way your original shot can always be scrutinised if you shot RAW.

If you shoot .jpg and change eg. the contrast on that file and save it as the original, the original contrast is gone forever and there is no proof of the changes.

Yes, still more areas to tweak in Raw than jpg.

Ok. When I do change a jpeg file, I either save the changed file as a copy, retaining the original. Or mostly I do it in picasa and everything is undo-able, and I use the changed one to print.

Press photos can be changed by saving the changes on the original jpg and not depict reality. You can not do that with raw.
