The Loss of Bill Cunningham

7 years 9 months ago #486711 by tobythephotoguy
I am so incredibly saddened by the blow the photo community has taken from the recent passing of Cunningham. Although I am a young photographer, Cunningham was one of the first professionals I admired. His incredible work ethic inspired me to keep going out (even when I felt that my work was complete garbage) and shooting every day, searching for the beauty in wherever I might be. He used a phrase along the lines of "using the camera as a pen" and that simple phrase has stuck with me throughout the years. Feel free to share any of your favorite sayings or photographs from the great as a means of celebrating his illustrious career!

I became familiar with Cunningham through the documentary Bill Cunningham New York (which I think is available on Netflix). Although this isn't specifically a favorite image of mine, this shot really captures what fascinates me about his photographs. I love the pairing of the harsh, geometric buildings with the subject's ornate hat. A lot of people that I know love to photograph in the streets of New York City, but Bill always managed to make photographs that were unmistakably his own.

I honestly do not know who this is.  Going to have to read up on him.

Scotty - Bill Cunningham was a street photographer in New York City well known for capturing fashion trends. If you're interested, both the New York Times article provided by Fess and the Netflix documentary srubio mentioned really capture his essence.

Going off the point made about Cunningham's tenacity and legendary perserverance, I'd like to take a moment to appreciate the fact that he kept making photographs well into his 80's. Can you imagine?!

Anyone seen this video ? Apparently this is one of the few interviews he did in his lifetime.
