The autofocus on 489 may have "latched onto" objects other than the car. Since the car was is the bottom part of the shot, more points were off the car than on. That's my guess.
As far as grain, anytime you crop a photo that much, it will get grainy unless you have like a 24mp, full sensor camera - then maybe. No different than film.
When I get a long shot of wildlife and crop heavily, the result is seldom pretty. Only a longer lens will cure that :(
Maybe a 2x teleconverter will get you closer without the weight (you will lose a bit of aperture though).

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

They call the wheel coming up biking?! I don't know the true meaning but know that if the judges would have seen it happening he would have been pulled off the track since the flip was eventually going to happen.
I use the 18-200 because of the wide angle and most of the tracks are so small that the 70-200 is too limiting for the way that I like to shoot. The other photographer has a different style and she loves her 70-300.

it will get grainy unless you have like a 24mp, full sensor camera - then maybe.

That may be it rather than the noise that I was told was the problem.
My husband and I had the big discussion over the next step for a camera this weekend as we were still trying to decide if we were gonna get the "Kid" one or not. Best Buy had a great deal on the D5100 w/bag and few lenses, and an ok deal on the D7000 and 2 lenses. We finally decided again to wait, I have learned everything about mine yet and can't see stepping up to the d7000 instead of going FF except for the lens thing...But I told him I have gotten awesome shots with my D60 and my D300s and I want to wait until they release the newest then decide lol.

I normally carry 2 bodies in the field, one with a wide zoom (or 50 prime) and the other a tele-zoom. That lets me get close shots and long ones. It's still a guessing game, especially at the rink. At autocrosses, it's easier because there are only one one or two cars running at a time. (my son used to autocross and have only three wheels on the ground about half the course. There it was legal and FAST.)

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Great series of shots... :judge:

Amazing you had the composure to get these exposures (yeah, I made a rhyme) as your son was flipping.... Glad he was ok...
