Singapore GP: First attempts at panning!

5 years 7 months ago #604304 by Darwish
Hello everyone,

Yesterday I attended my first Formula 1 event and I have to say it was quite exciting!
I’ve been reading a lot on panning (shooting a fast moving object at slower shutter speeds to give a bit of a blur to the background while the object is more focused). This technique depicts the object’s fast motion.

Anyway, I attempted to capture Lewis Hamilton (the champion) in a few laps using the panning technique and would love any reviews or critiques you guys might have. The only setbacks I would say is the fence in front of the grandstand and my seat was 2nd to last row so I was quite far, but I have to say the Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 ED VR is a great lens for shooting action!

Thanks and looking forward to your reviews!

Looks good.  I was thinking how hard it must be to get a shot of something moving that fast and even getting it in the frame.  Well done

The key is to shoot in Continuous High mode and hope one image has your subject where you want it to be! It can be tedious task getting the right shot, especially with the fence and crowd obstructing my view here, but when you get a decent shot it really is worth it!

Light is free… capturing it is not!
