It's a Surfing Safari

‘D’ is by far my fave.  I don’t have a problem with detailless blacks and whites ... especially if they add context and drama to the image.  ‘D’ is an artistic expression of action and stress and man vs. nature ... nature is unknown, with form or detail, yet powerful ... chasing the man as he escapes barely “outruns” Nature’s clutch, Nature’s grasp attempting to bring him down, down into the unknown water, white with turbulence.

There are photographs everywhere. It is the call of photographers to see and capture those images.

Like Gary, I don't mind black silhouettes but I do mind, here,
the burnt left of the frame and not for graphic reasons.

The dynamic of the surfer and the water are losing too much
drama through the absence of details… not a keeper for me!

Light is free… capturing it is not!

I think the fourth shot is really over exposed. the details of the shot are not that defined. My favorite is the first shot. I like the action in the photo.

Thank you for your replies re: #4

Yes - it is a grossly over exposed image but has a sort of 'cute' look, and I wondered about it

As an artistic expression it is fine.  As a documentary record ... it is overexposed.

Had a good sunny day today, with the on-shore wind being favourable as well, bringing the surfers closer to the breakwater, thus making it easier to get reasonable pix of them as they take a wave. Unfortunately photographically the waves were breaking away from the camera position, so the surfers oflen turned away from the camera position.

Anyway - here's a few for your pleasure & comment
Typical Exif ... Panny FZ-200; 1/1600s x F4 to F7; EV -0,7; ISO-100, lens at 20x zoom [about 550mm FF equiv]

a)

b)

c)

d) - what do you think about this one - shooting into the sun and getting almost a 'high-key' effect?

As always, feedback welcome
Phil

The 3rd shot is the most of the appealing to me. I like the silhouette and the action.

I agree. It would be great to see the details of the left side. I really don't mind the overexposure. I think it is unique and creative.

I love shot B it's filled with action and I think the surfer is in his best stance.
