Dog photography

Hello,
I recently got a Nikon D5600 and am having problems with focusing while my dog is running, especially towards me. I have tried some different focus settings but just can't seem to find the right ones.
I use continuous focus and single point focus. I've also started using back button focus which I like.
I also feel the stationary pictures of her just arent as crisp as my Nikon D90. I assume it is my settings but I don't know what specifically.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

BBF is the right thing but make sure AF is disengaged
from SR… otherwise contra-productive.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

You can always focus on a point on the ground and then wait for the dog to run into the focal area, then use burst mode.

This photo was incredibly staged.
I placed a piece of cardboard in the door way and focused on it. I knew he would attack the cardboard, and I just waited until the time was right.

But when I'm throwing the ball in the yard, I know he's going to come back to me, so I can focus on the ground and then wait.
