Nikon Settings for Photo booth using Gold Sequin Backdrop

6 years 7 months ago #536929 by [email protected]
I am going to setup a photo booth at a friends wedding so I have a question:

What settings should I set my camera for using a 4ft x 6ft Gold Sequin Photo Backdrop at 3:00pm.

I don't have the whole setup just going to have the backdrop and my camera. I'll be using the natural light as I don't have the fancy stuff just yet.

Advice? Don't.

Shiny stuff is always problematic, and a sequined backdrop has the potential to overwhelm your subject. If you're not to the point where you don't have to ask this question, you might consider (1) a different backdrop, and (2) practicing beforehand.

As for settings, we can't answer that. One simple approach is f/8 to keep everyone sharp, and as long a lens as you can get away with (which will probably be 50mm). Shutter speed? I don't shoot over 1/160, and even that sometimes isn't enough. Adjust ISO accordingly. If you're outside, you may have plenty of light, but you'll need to read it and work with it. You might consider an assistant with a white reflector, too.

That might be the best advice right there - don't. Seriously, you need to know how to do this to be able to do it for someone's wedding. You need to know how to meter the scene to determine settings. And a gold sequin background in a possibly low lit room could be tricky. I've done events, and it's possible to shoot an event in existing room light, but you need to know how to do it.

I think it might be better to suggest to your friend that there are places where photo booths can be rented including set up etc. and that might be a better option.
