question does anyone take pictures at night of stars.
last night i have notice that they had brighter stars out. and i was thinking this might be a good topic to talk about. i dont know nothing about taking picture of stars at night. what shutter speed would you use. and what lens would you use? and what f stop would you use.

I did once or twice, but I must have done something wrong, because my pictures were all black. :(

im wondering what shutter speed to use for the stars? i can use the bigger lens for the stars

You want to use the faster lens you have. For instance I have a 50mm 1.8 lens. I use that for night time shots. I have shot several star trail pictures and it's a great lens for it. Use a long exposure. 30 secs and longer. Put the camera on the bulb setting.

This is with a Canon Xsi, 50mm f/1.8 wide open and 20 sec exposure (note the meteor streaking across the center.

The bulb seting allows you to keep the shuter open as long as you hold the shuter release. You will nead a remote to do this or your camera may shake. The Nikon D3100
has a 30sec max exposer you can use that with the auto timer set to 2 sec at ISO 100 with the widest apature the stars will be properly exposed at least it worked for me.
